E85 Training
Training drivers on the merits of E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline) and related safety issues helps make E85 fleet projects successful. Download the presentation E85 as a Vehicle Fuel (PDF 817 KB) (PowerPoint 2.6 MB), developed by the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Institute for the U.S. Department of Energy, to help educate drivers, management, and staff about E85. Download Adobe Reader. The presentation has several modules, including the following:
- Introduction to E85
- Properties and Characteristics of E85
- E85 Fueling Stations
- Safety Practices and Emergency Action Plan
- What Makes an FFV Different?
- E85 in Review
Every fueling facility should have an emergency action plan, and all employees should be familiar with the actions necessary in the event of an accident. It is critical that a strong statement about safety policies is in place, mandatory safety meetings for employees and site users are held regularly, and safety procedures are reviewed annually.
E85 is a flammable liquid per the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard and should be handled accordingly. The safety standards for handling E85 are the same as those for gasoline. The National Fire Protection Association codes 30 and 30-A pertain to fueling stations and the handling of motor fuels and other combustible liquids.
