Abstract | Part of the National Park Service's mission is to promote the use and enjoyment of the parks while preserving their natural and historic resources. As part of the mission, NPS is deploying alternative transportation systems and alternative fuel vehicles in the parks to reduce vehicle traffic congestion, noise, and air pollution. Glacier National Park is also working to reduce congestion due to reconstruction of its Going-to-the-Sun Road. The report concludes that there is no single, best alternative fuel or vehicle propulsion system to meet all transportation requirements in the parks. In the absence of a major funding source for a particular alternative transportation system, growth in availability and use of alternative fuels and vehicles is most easily fostered by building on existing or readily available fuels and equipment. Growth occurs incrementally, with demand for alternative fuels and their availability increasing over time. |
