ABSTRACT

Abstract

President George W. Bush believes the power of technology and the innovative spirit of America will reduce our reliance on foreign sources of energy. We have both the technology and the know-how to meet the principal energy challenges we face: promoting energy conservation, repairing and modernizing our energy infrastructure, and increasing our energy supplies in ways that protect and improve the environment. A sound energy policy is also vital to national security and protecting the environment. We are increasingly concerned about the vulnerability of the electricity grid and pipeline systems to both unintentional and intentional disruptions. We are also focused on the environmental consequences of energy production, including emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases, primarily from the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas.

The President's Advanced Energy Initiative provides a 22% increase in funding for clean-energy technology research at the Department of Energy in two vital areas: (1) Changing the way we fuel our vehicles; and (2) Changing the way we power our homes and businesses.
