Status Update: E85 Dispenser System Certified (June 2010)

In June 2010, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certified fuel-dispensing systems for E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). The fuel-dispensing system includes dispenser, hose, nozzle, swivel, breakaway, and shear valves. UL developed a testing subject (procedure) for E85 dispensing equipment in 2007 and worked with manufacturers and government agencies to get the appropriate equipment through the certification process.

Clean Cities worked with local code officials, fire marshals, authorities having jurisdiction, and other stakeholders to enable stations to dispense E85 while the listing process was ongoing. Equipment certified for E85 was subjected to various test fluids and performance tests to simulate exposure and operating conditions encountered over the expected lifetime of the equipment. This listing covers dispensing equipment that is designed to be used with ethanol fuel concentrations up to E85 (85%).
