Status Update: E25 Dispensers Certified, E15 Warranty Upgraded, and Testing on Ethanol Blends Continues (May 2010)
E25 Dispenser Certification
In March 2010, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certified dispensers (UL Subject 87A-E25) from the two U.S. retail fuel dispenser producers, Dresser Wayne and Gilbarco. These newly listed dispensers, Dresser Wayne Ovation Eco Fuel and Gilbarco Encore Flex Fuel S, dispense ethanol blends up to E25. They are the first UL-certified dispensers approved for ethanol blends above E10. At this time, no hanging hardware is certified for E25, which includes hoses, swivels, nozzles, and breakaways.
Warranty for E15 Dispenser
Gilbarco recently announced an upgraded warranty for dispensers manufactured after April 1, 2008. The company will now honor warranty claims for dispensers that dispense E15 and were manufactured after this date. This is a retroactive warranty; however, it is important to note that these dispensers are not officially listed by UL for use with E15 and the fuel is not currently approved for use. The Environmental Protection Agency will decide on the E15 waiver in 2010.
High-Level Blend Dispenser under Review
Dresser Wayne announced that it has two dispenser systems currently under review for certification at UL: (1) blender pump functionality that will enable the Ovation Eco Fuel dispenser to blend high-level ethanol blends and (2) certification of the Ovation Eco Fuel dispenser for E85.
Dispenser Testing for Mid-Level Ethanol Blends
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is testing E15 (15% ethanol, 85% gasoline) compatibility with regular gasoline dispenser systems. These tests are being conducted at UL using Subject 87A. Dispensing equipment entered the conditioning chamber in early January and performance testing will commence in June. Publication of results is expected in the third quarter of 2010.
