This chart shows the number and types of light-duty vehicles produced in the United States from 1975 to 2023. U.S. light-duty vehicle production was significantly impacted by the economic recession between 2009 and 2012. In 2017, for the first time, the number of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) exceeded the number of cars produced; by 2021, twice as many SUVs were produced than cars. Vehicle production dipped again from 2020 to 2022 as a result of COVID-19 and subsequent supply-chain issues. In 2023, cars made up 25.04% of light-duty vehicles, while vans made up 2.47%, SUVs made up 57.82%, and pickups made up 14.67%. For comparison, see U.S. HEV Sales by Model.
